Each year, the Cannes Film Festival sneaks up on us in our post-Met Gala haze, providing yet another reason to praise the best fashion of the season. Between the models, celebrities, and cinema folk, it makes for a lot of dresses (and five-in-one outfits) to be documented. This year's offering of ready-to-wear, couture, and the like (all while being worn beachside) didn't disappoint.
In the slideshow ahead, we'll be keeping you up to date on our favorite looks from this year's festival until the very. Last. Photo call. Where some played it safe (which isn't a bad thing), others took black tie to another dimension. Because some Armani Privé and casual Givenchy haute couture are exactly what you'd wear to celebrate this year's upcoming achievements in film? Oh, the life...

Emilia Schüle
We're conflicted. The Marina Hoermanseder bustier on this dress is making us want to suit up and slay the carpet, but the custom train is telling us to find our chill. What to do, what to do...

Tanya Dyagileva
We're getting some major mermaid vibes from this Georges Hobeika gown on model Tanya Dyagileva. That is, if Ariel were decide to finally come out of the water and magically land on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.

Jessica Chastain
When walking the red carpet in France, canary yellow can sometimes give onlookers unwanted ketchup-and-mustard imagery. But all we see here is an Armani Privé dress tailored and draped to perfection.

At this point, it's common knowledge that an LBD is perfect for any occasion, but let model Lily Donaldson remind you that the long-BD is just as good. We wouldn't mind copping this Miu Miu one for ourselves.
