Why Companies Are Using Feminism To Try To Sell You Everything

$

From pussy hats to Pantene shampoo, it feels like companies and advertisers have become obsessed with distorting feminism in order to sell products.

While campaigns designed by brands like Dove Soap and Lucky Strike Cigarettes have tried to tangle their merchandise to the language of women's empowerment, feminism has, of course, never been about enriching corporations: A radical cry for equal rights that's remained incomplete since 1848's Seneca Falls Convention, the movement has often been co-opted by capitalism's agenda.

And, as you might have noticed, the work of feminism has rarely felt more unfinished, or more vital, than it does today. Below, check out Strong Opinions Loosely Held 's conversation with celebrated author and Bitch Media co-founder, Andi Zeisler, to hear her take on the dangers of commercializing feminism.

Subscribe to Strong Opinions Loosely Held on Apple Podcasts and follow our video channel on Facebook.

Zeisler has spent her career exploring the consequences of absorbing this pertinent social justice issue into pop and consumer culture (check out her book, We Were Feminists, to learn even more about the interaction between ideology and capitalism). "Celebrity feminism is tricky," she says. "It's a really valuable way in, especially for people who might not have been exposed to feminism through their schools, or their friendships or their parents." But she warns that there are major drawbacks to pulling feminism out of the political arena and into capitalist economies. "It's difficult because equal rights aren't a brand — they're not a static movement. Rather, feminism is a way of thinking about and advocating for ethics, and most political goals are not necessarily aligned with the ones celebrities are excited about."

Zeisler argues that by using feminism language to sell us deodorant or conditioner or underwear, brands lull women into a false sense of complacency. She worries about the movement's future if its captivating rhetoric, and all the money-making opportunities that follow, were to suddenly fall out of fashion.

"There's a way in which products marketed to women are sold with this language of empowerment — as if it's something that you can possess, rather than a very relevant, and very unfinished, social and political movement," Zeisler notes. "Activist feminism understands that there is so much more work to do, whereas marketplace feminism says 'we just need to make some tweaks and nips and tucks to mainstream culture.' So, there's danger there for sure."

Pop culture's borrowing marketing ideas from feminism becomes even more fraught when one considers who it's excluding. After all, how could advertising's obsession with punchy tag-lines encompass all of intersectionalism's layered anxieties? Often, this approach to social justice deeply invested in the overlooked stories of black, brown, and queer women. "Celebrities tend to gravitate towards the easiest and the most accepted issues of feminism. Equal pay for equal work, reproductive rights, and body image have gotten the most air time within feminism because they're the ones most relevant to middle-class, white, educated women," Zeisler reminds us. "But my question is what can celebrities do about the ways in which feminism still has so much work to do on a policy level in ways that aren't sexy, that don't look good on a magazine cover. What about those issues and what can celebrities really do for them?"

Dude, Where’s My Phone? Your Ultimate Guide To Tracking It Down

$
0
0

On the list of things you never want to lose — your ID, passport, keys — your phone probably takes one of the top spots.

As a lifeline to your contacts, social accounts, bank accounts, and email — not to mention all of your photos and saved notes — just the thought of misplacing your phone can induce instant cold sweats and panic. Never has "SOS, please someone help me" felt so appropriate.

Luckily, there are some steps you can take that will put you in a better position if you do misplace or lose your phone, as well as things to do to protect your personal data if the dreaded loss does occurs. Ahead, a guide on how to track your Android phone or iPhone down.

Before Misplacing Your iPhone

Even if you haven't yet lost your iPhone, it's a smart idea to take some preemptive measures that will help in the event that you do misplace it. To use Apple's device-finding capabilities, you need to turn on "Find My iPhone." Go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone, toggle it on, and type in your Apple ID when requested. (If you have an Apple Watch or AirPods, taking this step also activates them, too.)

Now, you're all set for the inevitable moment your phone gets lost between sofa cushions.

When You've Lost Your iPhone

While attempting to keep panic at bay, head to iCloud online and log in with your Apple ID. Tap "Find My iPhone." If you have more than one Apple device, tap "All Devices" along the top dashboard and select your iPhone (the green dot indicates your phone is online and tells you when it was last located).

If your iPhone is turned on and in range of Wi-Fi, a green dot marking its location will appear on the map. Press that and you'll see your phone's remaining battery life, as well as options to have your phone play a sound, activate lost mode (which will lock your phone), or erase your iPhone data if you believe your phone was stolen.

If the geolocation circle surrounding your phone makes it hard to pinpoint this location, that may be due to a lack of WiFi. Apple suggests refreshing the map after a few minutes and trying again.

If Find My iPhone Isn't Set Up (Or Isn't Working)

Reach out to your phone carrier. Some, such as Verizon, offer free apps with location tracking to show you where your phone was last located. Verizon's Support & Protection App also lets you erase the contents of your phone if it's gone for good.

If Find My iPhone Isn't Set Up Or Isn't Working (Cont.)

If your phone is linked to your Gmail account, you also have some options through that. Go to myaccount.Google.com and select "Find Your Phone" within the "Sign-in & Security" category. From there, you can log out of your Gmail account on your phone so that no one else can access it — an important step because email accounts often have critical personal information (such as credit card information and passwords.)

If You Have An Android Phone

The Android version of "Find My iPhone" is simply "Find My Device." The same rules apply here — your phone needs to be turned on, have location services and "Find My Device" activated, and be near WiFi or connected to data.

If that's the case, you can simply Google "Find My Device" to see where your phone is and ring it from a distance.

Additional Measures To Take

If you want to have extra backup in place, there are two good options. The free app Lookout operates in much the same way as "Find My Device" and "Find My iPhone" and lets you sound an alarm, lock your phone, and wipe data.

You can also buy Tile, a small Bluetooth tracker, to keep on your key ring or at home. Sync the $25 tracker with your phone and press it to activate a sound. This works even if your phone is on silent or vibrate.

Kendall Jenner Needs You To Know That She Doesn't Smoke

$

Kendall Jenner doesn't smoke. That's what she says, at least. Her latest Instagram suggests otherwise — she's lounging, naked, on a table ensconced in fauna. There's a cigarette dangling from her hand.

"I don't smoke," she writes in the caption, as if to preempt internet outrage. So, she held the cigarette for effect — it lends the photo a sexy, glammed-up femme fatale vibe, if you will.

Try as she might to prevent backlash, commenters are a little puzzled by the caption. Thing is, Kendall, if you don't smoke and don't want to endorse it, why would you pose with a cigarette?

"I'm glad you say you don't smoke but I am curious if they force you to pose with a cigarette? If so, that's disappointing to be using your voice and influence such an unhealthy habit," one commenter notes gently.

i don't smoke

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

Another adds, "Then why advertise with a cigarette?" (The same commenter added the eyeroll emoji for effect.)

Her detractors raise a good point. Actions speak louder than words — the image of Jenner, 21, smoking a cigarette is more powerful than her insistence that she doesn't smoke. That's how advertising works.

Her sister Kylie has come under heat before for sharing photos of herself smoking online. In May, fans were disappointed when Kendall shared a photo of her 19-year-old sibling seemingly handing off a lit cigarette.

Some fans are drawing a connection between this post and a similar Instagram on Bella Hadid's account. The model, who is among Jenner's peers, shared an image of herself smoking with the caption, "I quit."

One commenter muses on the post, "I think they're trying to say they quit. Kendall Jenner posted something similar."

Maybe this — celebrities publicly quitting smoking on Instagram — is the start of a trend.

The Comic-Con Porn Everyone Was Searching For

Even if you don't like comic books, superhero movies, sci-fi, or anime, you're probably well aware that San Diego held its annual Comic-Con event last weekend, July 20 to 23.

Comic-Con has attracted more than 130,000 people in recent years, according to the event's website. And as we've learned from other major entertainment news, when something big like Comic-Con happens, or new movies such as Wonder Woman are released, you can bet people will be looking for porn for it.

So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that when thousands of people flood into San Diego to attend the conference every year, Pornhub experiences a surge of traffic in the area from people looking to watch Comic-Con porn.

New statistics from the site found that searches coming from the San Diego area that included the phrase "Comic-Con" increased by 2767% this year as compared to the days leading up to the event.

Not only that, but searches correlating to the event — such as "Wonder Woman," "anime big tits," and "cosplay lesbian" — also experienced major boosts. "Anime big tits" increased by 382%, "cosplay uncensored" by 345%, "cosplay lesbian" by 233%, and "Wonder Woman" by 203%.

"While the search increase in San Diego for 'comic con' was up 2767%, we saw an increase of 283% across the United States over the event weekend, which amounted to around 5,000 searches per day," Corey Price, vice president of Pornhub, tells Refinery29.

Searches for cosplay and superhero are popular on the site throughout the year, he says, but searches in San Diego increased by more than 2000 and 1000 respectably per day during Comic-Con.

It's just even more evidence that porn really can reflect our interests.

Let's talk about 69-ing. Please take a moment to fill out our survey, by clicking on the image below.

Southwest Is Having A Huge Flash Sale, With Flights Starting At $59 — But It Ends Tomorrow!

$

Caribbean vacation, here you come. Southwest is having an epic flash sale on flights to some of the hottest (both literally and figuratively) vacation spots, reports MyDomaine — plus plenty of other deals on foreign and domestic trips to satisfy your thrifty side.

Some of the flights are as cheap as $59 one-way. The only seeming downside? This flash sale ends tomorrow(Thursday, July 27), so you better get booking quickly!

Here's how to take advantage of these deals: Head over to Southwest.com and check out all the cheap domestic and international fares. Even if you don't score a $59 deal, there is a good number of deep discounts to find. The prices are valid for both domestic and foreign routes from August 22, 2017, through December 13, 2017, and they are nonrefundable.

MyDomaine reports that fares on international flights from Fort Lauderdale, FL, are some of the cheapest: You can hop over to the Cayman Islands starting at $59 one-way; the Bahamas, Belize, or Turks and Caicos for $69; Costa Rica or Cuba for $99; Jamaica for $121; and tourist hotbed Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for $129.

What's great about these particular prices is that flights to Fort Lauderdale from various other U.S. destinations are also discounted — so if you don't happen to live in South Florida, you can plan for a layover there and still save on your vacation travel. For example, flights to FLL from Atlanta or from Raleigh-Durham, NC, start at $84; $86 from Albany, NY; $87 from Baltimore, MD; and $115 from Providence, RI.

Additionally, you're in luck if you have your sights on heading to Cancun, Mexico: Cancun flights start at $155 from Houston; $170 from Atlanta; $175 from Austin; $189 from Chicago; $209 from Baltimore, MD; and $212 from Denver.

Simple Editing Hacks That Will Make Even Your Worst Travel Photo Insta-Worthy

$

Editing photos for Instagram can be a slippery slope. There are the obvious "don'ts" — don't mess with someone's skin or body — as well as some unspoken rules, such as not making your photo look overdone or fake. But an edit that's done well can have major pluses.

"At the end of the day, the reason we take photos is because we're trying to share something," Josh Haftel, mobile product manager for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, says. "Going in and editing your photo enables you to have that much more ability to tell your story."

Haftel believes that editing is a major element in today's digital photography space. That's because cameras, regardless of whether you're using an iPhone or a DSLR, aren't the only tools for a creating a meaningful photo. Editing allows you to bring out the colors that struck you most as you try to recreate the in-the-moment experience you had on that cliff or beach at sunset.

While on an Adobe photography trip to Cuba last week, I sat down with professional photographer and filmmaker Renan Ozturk, who walked me through a ten-step process of turning what I thought was one of my worst travel photos into one of my best.

Click through to see how some simple tweaks can turn an image into Insta-gold.

Ed. Note: Adobe paid for travel expenses and provided a Lightroom membership for the purposes of writing this story.

At first glance, I didn't think this photo was salvageable. While the sky looks appropriately moody, it's hard to make out the rest of the dark photo. But Ozturk assured me that the darkness was a good thing — had I overexposed the photo while shooting in an attempted to brighten up the greenery below, the sky would have come out too bright otherwise. You can pull details out from the darkness, but it's very hard to add details back in to an overly bright white scene.

Step 1: Focus on the sky

The first step in fixing the photo was to open it in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Because this photo is evenly split between the sky and the landscape below, Ozturk told me to break my edits into two pieces, working on the sky first.

To do so, tap selective > the "plus" icon in the upper lefthand corner > the square gradient icon on the far right. Drag the gradient so that it covers the sky. The red just shows you which part of the photo your selective edits will apply to.

Note: While many of Lightroom's editing tools are free, some premium features, including selective edits are only available to members, for $9.99 per month.

Step 2: Darken the sky

Select "light" in the bottom toolbar and lower the exposure slightly, bringing out some of the darkness in the clouds.

Step 3: Make the sky pop

Select "effects" in the bottom toolbar and raise the "dehaze" effect. You'll notice that the sky becomes clearer.

Step 4: Focus on the landscape

Add another gradient to the bottom half of the photo. Tap "selective" > the "plus" icon in the upper left-hand corner > the square gradient icon on the far right. Drag the gradient over the bottom half of the photo.

Step 5: Brighten the overall landscape

Here's where the magic really takes place. Tap "light" and raise the exposure. You'll see details that were previously hidden in darkness appear, adding an entirely new element to the photo.

Step 6: See more detail

To make the shrubbery stand out, tap "effects" and raise the clarity.

Step 7: Focus on the flowers

Brightening the landscape worked wonders, and you can stop there but it's also possible to make the red flowers pop even more. Tap "selective" > the "plus" icon in the left-hand corner > the circular icon. Drag a circular radiant over the flowers until they're completely.

Step 8: Brighten the flowers

Tap "light" and raise the exposure.

Step 9: Get rid of the pink roof

You could end your editing with the above step, but Ozturk and I went one step further, editing out the distracting pink roof in the lower lefthand corner. To do so, we went into Photoshop Fix (to go directly from Lightroom to Fix, tap the export icon in the upper righthand corner, select "open in", and choose "maximum available" for the image size).

Once in Fix, tap "healing."

Step 10: Target the roof

Finger paint with the in-app brush over the roof. The roof will disappear, replaced by more shrubbery.

And voilà! A photo that wasn't even good enough to text to one friend, let alone share on Instagram, is now ready to earn likes galore.

Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake, And Jimmy Fallon Broke Into A House Like It Was No Big Deal

Jessica Biel, her husband, Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon, and his wife, Nancy, had the most normal vacation in the Hamptons over Memorial Day weekend. There was some bike-riding, cool toys, and casual law-breaking.

While on The Tonight Show, Jessica Biel and Jimmy Fallon talked about their weekend getaway. It started off totally innocently. Biel and Timberlake had their son, Silas, and Fallon brought his daughters, Winnie and Frances.

Then, Fallon told the audience about his adventures "bro-biking" with Justin Timberlake. The two men shared a tandem bike and made this hilarious video. (That's Biel behind the camera; she directed the shoot, of course.)

Bro-biking. @jimmyfallon 🚲 #memorialdayweekend

A post shared by Justin Timberlake (@justintimberlake) on

Then, while the men did a couple more laps on their bro-bike, the wives went to check out an "open" house.

"We basically checked every door on the ground level to see if we could get in," Biel admitted. "And one was left open."

After realizing the realtor was not there, the couples just shut the door behind them and carried on their bike ride.

Just kidding.

"Dude, we stayed for a while," Fallon laughed. Biel revealed that they looked at every single room in the house, including a basement screening room and the detached pool house.

Their thorough look at the house helped them all come to the decision that it just wasn't the right pick for them. "It was a nice house. Maybe not my style, not your style, but I can appreciate the architecture, sure," Biel said. "And I hope somebody gets it."

If your new house in the Hamptons looks strangely like the set of the "bro-bikes" video, it's very likely that Jessica Biel and Jimmy Fallon hung out inside. Maybe this'll increase its property value.

All The Weird Things Selena Gomez Puts In Her Mouth For "Fetish"

$

Love makes you do crazy things. For Selena Gomez in her "Fetish" video, love is the thing that makes her put a lot of strange items in her mouth to express her borderline deranged desire for someone she is... fetishizing over. After weeks of teasing the video, Gomez has finally released it in full.

This music video is quite the deviation from Gomez's previous videos, but it just proves that the former child star has completely broken out of her mold. Hopefully, though, her fans can keep up with the more adult content and confusing metaphors sprinkled throughout her new projects. Gomez is no stranger to singing lyrics about love, lust, and the crazy things it makes us do. But this is the first time that she's brought her lyrical messages to such artistic heights. Just look at how she rolls around on the frosty floor of a meat locker full of frozen peaches.

Directed and shot by photographer and Gucci muse Petra Collins, this dreamlike video embodies the state of total intoxication one finds themselves in when they're enraptured by someone. Feelings are intense, and they make people act... strangely. Gomez is showing off a new side of herself that is equal parts innocence and sultriness, part sunshine and rain storms, part old Gomez and new Gomez.

But the most interesting part of the video, which takes place in a rundown suburban home on a sunny afternoon, is the items that find their way into Gomez's mouth. Let's just look at some of the screenshots because I can't really say anything else more than this: don't try this at home.

Here are all the weird things Gomez put in her mouth for art.

An eyelash curler.

Blue soap.

A rope.

Lipstick.

Broken glass.

Honey.

Her eyelash curler again.

And now, watch the music video itself. It's an experience.

Angelina Jolie Reveals She Had Bell's Palsy

It was announced today that Angelina Jolie would be featured on Vanity Fair 's September cover this year. The interview featured in the issue — now available online — is incredibly wide-ranging, but one of the most interesting revelations is Jolie's account of her struggle with Bell's palsy.

Jolie told Vanity Fair that she developed the condition last year. Bell's palsy causes drooping on one side of a person's face, Vanity Fair explains, due to nerve damage. Luckily, the actress was able to make a full recovery from the condition, and she says that's all thanks to acupuncture.

"Sometimes women in families put themselves last... until it manifests itself in their own health," Jolie told Vanity Fair contributing editor Evgenia Peretz. The star apparently developed hypertension last year, too, in addition to suffering from palsy.

Jolie added that she's "being smart" about her life decisions and her health.

"I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I'm being smart about my choices, and I'm putting my family first, and I'm in charge of my life and my health," she told Vanity Fair. "I think that's what makes a woman complete."

During the interview, Jolie also discussed her directorial work on the upcoming Netflix movie First They Killed My Father, which is based on Loung Ung's memoir about the Khmer Rouge genocide.

"There wasn't a person who was working on the movie who didn't have a personal connection," Jolie told Vanity Fair about making the film in Cambodia. "They weren't coming to do a job. They were walking in the exodus for the people whom they had lost in their family, and it was out of respect for them that they were going to re-create it... It completed something for them."

For some crew members, there were even flashbacks as they worked on the project, Vanity Fair explains, and a therapist was available on set. The movie has a personal connection for Jolie, too — her son Maddox, familiar with Loung's story, encouraged Jolie to take on the project. (Maddox is listed as an executive producer on the movie, too.)

Vanity Fair 's September issue hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on August 3, and it will be available digitally through iTunes and Kindle on that date as well. It hits national newsstands on August 8. You can read the full profile over at Vanity Fair.

Proenza Schouler Adds Its Voice To The Fight To Save Planned Parenthood

If we can provide some positivity to counteract the deafening push notifications hitting your phones these days, let us show you what it looks like when fashion joins the fight.

New York-based ready-to-wear label Proenza Schouler recently added its name to the list of designers doing what they can to support Planned Parenthood. On Tuesday, the brand released a video directed by Harley Weir (who recently shot Stella McCartney's latest socially-sound fashion campaign) and styled by Vogue alum Camilla Nickerson, that features some of today's most prominent industry faces bringing attention to the cause via personal stories and declarations.

With the repeal-only bill still being debated, no one really knows what the future looks like for the government-funded organization that provides reproductive healthcare for women But, our administration's plans to defund the non-profit for at least a year is scary enough to get people talking (and acting). In an official press release, designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez explained why Planned Parenthood means so much to them and their luxury fashion label. "In recent months, Proenza Schouler has been driven by a need to stand up with organizations that fight for the causes we believe in," they said. "Now more than ever we feel it is important to use our voice and platform to speak out in support of the things we care deeply about. Planned Parenthood means so much to the women who work at our company, and to the community Planned Parenthood serves in New York City and beyond."

The video boasts a laundry list of high-profile personalities: supermodels Stella Tennant and Amber Valletta, musician Grimes, model and intersex activist Hanne Gabby Odiele, transgender model Hari Nef, actress Jemima Kirke, and plus-size model Paloma Elsesser, to name a few. But what they have to say goes far beyond their star status. "I'm not sure that pregnancy changed me," Kirke explained. "But giving birth definitely did." Shortly after, Tennant adds: "It's really important that women have a choice. It's really important that women are in charge of their bodies, and their lives, and their future." These are just a few of the campaign's sentiments on the complexity of femininity, and what it would mean for the government to interfere with how women govern themselves.

While the spot acts as more of a call to action or PSA as opposed to donating any proceeds of sales to Planned Parenthood, it still serves as a meaningful way for a luxury fashion brand to show its consumers that it's paying attention to what's going on off the runway, too. Shortly after the news broke that the Trump administration was working to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, the CFDA worked with over 40 of its members to participate in the Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood initiative, which raised awareness via T-shirts, pens, and other merchandise. Since then, several retailers and up-and-coming labels have remained dedicated to the fight to save the organization.

Watch the spot in full below, and please, donate.

The Best Way To Prevent UTIs In The Summertime

$
0
0

Here's a good reason to pee in the ocean the next time you're at the beach: It could prevent a painful urinary tract infection. UTIs are terrible no matter the season, but when you're spending a lot of time in a bathing suit in the summer, it can seem like they happen constantly.

"There is some data that UTIs are more frequent in the summer, mainly for younger women ages 17 to 44," says Raquel B. Dardik, MD, an Ob/Gyn at NYU Langone Medical Center. There's no specific explanation why this is, but it's probably a combination of being dehydrated and not urinating enough, she says.

Some people think that wearing a bathing suit causes UTIs, but that isn't entirely true. Sure, hanging around in a wet bathing suit isn't a great idea for vaginal health in general, because the dark and moist environment is like a playground for bacteria. But bathing suits wont actually cause a UTI.

Usually, you get a UTI because bacteria that's normally found in your bowels ends up in your urinary tract via your urethra, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). This can happen when you don't wipe well, or wipe from the back to the front, Dr. Dardik says. And if you're having lots of summertime sex, be sure to pee before and after, and wipe well again. In general, people with vaginas are more likely to get UTIs because they have a shorter urethra than someone with a penis, according to the NIDDK.

Urine usually pushes the bacteria out of your urinary tract, but if you hold your bladder for extended periods of time, or your immune system is compromised, then you might end up with a UTI, according to the NIDDK. That said, you're not doomed to a summer of UTIs just because you have a vagina.

Staying hydrated is your first line of defense, Dr. Dardik says — and using all that hydration to pee. "Women get more dehydrated in the summer, and may urinate less frequently," she says. This can be tricky at the beach or pool, if you don't have access to a bathroom (or you're squeamish about peeing with the fish), but holding it in means you're not flushing out any bacteria that may have made its way into your urinary tract.

If you do have a UTI, hydration can also help, but try to avoid drinks that could irritate your bladder, like coffee or alcohol, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Whether you're at a pool party, at the beach, or at your summer fling's house, make sure you pee regularly in order to prevent a urinary tract infection. It can be annoying to deal with peeling off your suit every few hours or finding a beach bathroom to use, but it's definitely worth it. "Whatever the reason, it is wise to make sure to stay hydrated and wipe properly," Dr. Dardik says.

It's official. As of last week's episode of Game of Thrones, the only two confirmed living Targaryens, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, are gearing up for a family reunion in Dragonstone. The only hitch? In a twist of dramatic irony, Jon and Daenerys don’t know they’re related. We don’t blame Jon for not knowing he’s a Targaryen – he’s not platinum blond, and he's been told his entire life that he's Ned Stark's bastard son.

In short, Daenerys Targaryen is Jon Snow's aunt. How’s that possible? To understand their shared lineage, we have to travel 17 years prior to the start of Game of Thrones, when the events that led to Jon Snow’s birth happened to be the same events that led to the collapse of the Targaryens’ centuries-long hold on the Iron Throne.

First, let's start with Jon Snow. As Bran's flashback during the Season 6 finale proved, Jon Snow is not the bastard son of Ned Stark, as he long thought growing up on the sidelines of Winterfell and getting side-eye from Catelyn Stark. Jon is actually the son of Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark, and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the son of King Aerys and heir to the Iron Throne.

Depending on who's telling the story, Rhaegar either captured Lyanna, or they eloped. Either way, they conceived a child, Jon Snow. At the time, Lyanna was engaged to Ned’s friend, Robert Baratheon, and Prince Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell. Lyanna's abduction set off a series of events called Robert's Rebellion, a civil war which ultimately deposed the Targaryen family and put Robert Baratheon the throne.

Before dying due to childbirth complications, Lyanna made Ned swear to look out for Jon. "If Robert finds out, he’ll kill him, you know he will. You have to protect him. Promise me, Ned," Lyanna whispered.

Lyanna had reason to worry about the fate of her half-Targaryen infant son. The Targaryens were essentially decimated during Robert's Rebellion.

After the Lannister troops stormed King's Landing during the last act of Robert's Rebellion, the erratic, unstable King Aerys II Targaryen was killed by Jaime Lannister, a member of his Kingsguard. Aerys' heirs were also effectively removed: Prince Rhaegar, his wife, and two sons were murdered.

This brings us to Daenerys Targaryen, the infant daughter of Aerys II Targaryen, the so-called "Mad King." After Robert took the throne, Aerys' pregnant wife fled King's Landing along with her son, Viserys. Like Jon, Daenerys was born at the tail end of the rebellion; like Jon, her mother died in childbirth.

With the help of Targaryen loyalists, the infant Daenerys and her brother, Viserys, were carted over the Narrow Sea to Essos, and spent their lives trying to reclaim the Targaryen place on the Iron Throne. Viserys was later killed when Khal Drogo gave him a "golden crown."

Daenerys and Jon Snow have quite a bit in common. They were raised without mothers. They are talented at making rousing speeches and raising armies. Factions of the R'hollor religion are convinced each is the Prince — or Princess — that was Promised, the individual sent to vanquish darkness from the world.

Instead of debating whether Jon or Daenerys is the chosen individual, also known as Azor Ahai, it's quite possible that they both are. The Azor Ahai prophecy indicates the "the dragon has three heads,” leading some theorists to conclude that the Prince will manifest himself in three "dragon riders." If fans are right, and Tyrion Lannister actually is a Targaryen, then Daenerys, Jon, and Tyrion will form three points of the Azor Ahai trinity.

Either way, Jon and Daenerys' union, whether political or marital, will have huge repercussions in Westeros. Yes, we said marital. Did you really think being related disqualifies them from getting married? The Targaryens were notorious for their inclination toward incest — in fact, the original Targaryen who conquered King's Landing, Aegon, was married to both of his sisters.

If they're not squeamish about their shared blood, Jon and his aunt Daenerys could restore the Targaryen line to the Iron Throne together.

Kylie Jenner's Recent Snaps Have Us Wondering If She's Going Vegan

For a while, we were getting daily Snaps of what Kylie Jenner was cooking, but it's been a minute since she gave us a ramen hack or a new French toast recipe to try out. Yesterday, though, amidst over 50 Snaps previewing her new Kylie Cosmetics Birthday Collection, she ended the streak and clued us back in to what she was eating. Interestingly, the food photos and videos that Jenner shared all featured vegan dishes, which made us wonder if the young reality TV star and beauty mogul is transitioning to an all-vegan diet.

The first food photo Kylie posted on Snapchat yesterday featured some delicious looking tacos with blue corn shells. To our surprise, the youngest Jenner wrote across the image, "I'm trying this whole vegan thing. Vegan Tacos." Very soon after posting the photo of the vegan tacos, she shared another photo, and this one featured nachos. Over this picture Jenner typed, "Vegan Raw Soy Free Dairy Free Grain Free Nachos mmm."

At first it was unclear whether Kylie meant she was "trying out this whole vegan thing" just for that meal. However, after posting a bunch of videos of her new Kylie Cosmetic collection, she returned to the kitchen to show off two more vegan dishes. Three hours after the vegan tacos and vegan nachos made their appearances on Kylie's Snap Story, she posted a video of two vegan pizzas sizzling in the oven. She also shared one of squash being sautéd in a pan.

This second round of vegan food shots definitely has us wondering if the celeb is seriously considering switching to a vegan diet. But it also has us asking who in the world was eating all this food? Tacos, nachos, two pizzas, and squash in a span of four hours is impressive, and we can't help but be a little jealous even though it's all vegan.

As for the question of whether Kylie Jenner is going vegan, we don't have the answer. However, we do know that she loves animals — as evidenced by her ever-growing roster of pets and frequent jaunts to pet exotic animals in other countries — so for that reason, it wouldn't be all that surprising for her to give up eating animal products. Maybe in her next (long-overdue) episode of Cooking with Kylie she'll give us a new vegan recipe.

Angelina Jolie Says "Things Became Difficult" In Her Relationship With Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's relationship has been a Hollywood staple since the two met on set in 2004. Fast forward to September 2016, however, when Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt and announced that she was seeking sole custody of their six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox. Until now, the 42-year-old has remained relatively quiet about what happened between the power couple, but finally opened up in an interview with Vanity Fair — whose cover she's gracing for their September 2017 issue.

The interview has unearthed a lot of tidbits we never knew (for instance, that Pitt was the one who convinced her to have their three biological children) and facts about their relationship that are pretty surprising (Jolie doesn't know anything about decorating, that was always "Brad's thing"). However, the interview takes a turn for the heartbreaking when she finally speaks about their divorce.

"Things got bad," she told the magazine. "I didn’t want to use that word...Things became 'difficult.'" However, she's adamant that they never had a negative lifestyle, and that wasn't the reason for the split.

"We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing," she cryptically explained. "[The children are] not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some...from life, from things in life."

Despite that murky answer, Jolie's answers about her ex are nothing but diplomatic.

"We care for each other and care about our family, and we are both working towards the same goal," she explained to Vanity Fair, adding that she doesn't want anyone to feel bad for her. "I was very worried about my mother, growing up — a lot. I do not want my children to be worried about me. I think it’s very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything’s going to be all right even when you’re not sure it is."

Here's hoping things get back on track.

Caitlyn Jenner Responds To Trump's Military Ban

Hours after President Donald Trump announced a ban on transgender people in the military on Twitter, Caitlyn Jenner tweeted her response.

"There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?" the 67-year-old wrote, as per The Hollywood Reporter. With the statement, she also shared the President's now iconic tweet from June of 2016 in which he promised to support the LGBTQ community. (He wrote, "Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.")

A decorated Olympic athlete and reality television star, Jenner is one of the most prominent transgender women in American pop culture. She voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election, and has since taken a lot of flak for this decision. Since Trump announced his decision to keep transgender individuals from the military, Twitter users began tweeting at Jenner, asking for a response.

Jenner is repeatedly questioned for her decision to vote conservative — she's a friend of Trump, and has discussed openly her involvement in the administration.

"One thing you've received criticism from the community about is you voted for Donald Trump," Seth Meyers pointed out on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

"God, I did?" Jenner asked in mock horror. She then explained, "I’m not a one-issue voter. [But] I’m not stupid. The Republican party does not do a good job when it comes to equality and the entire LGBT community. The Democrats are better there."

She continued, "I believe in little things like the Constitution and freedom. I believe in minimal government. I believe in the people of this country to get us out of the trouble that we're in, financially and economically, more than I believe the government is going to fix the issue. The Republicans have done a better job in that direction."

However, Donald Trump's administration is slowly but surely encroaching on the rights of the trans community, and by extension the LGBTQ community. When Trump reversed Obama's efforts to lend trans students the right to use the bathroom they choose, Jenner tweeted to the president: "This is a disaster."

Scrunchies, choker necklaces, body glitter, lip gloss — this is just some of the evidence that our favorite decade is back in a big way. Celebs like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Zendaya, and Olivia Culpo are all wearing hints of the '90s that we thought were gone for good. But there's one throwback trend in particular that's easier to recreate and cheaper to buy than the rest, and it happens to be Jenner's favorite. Enter: headbands.

The young star took to her website to share her love for the hair accessory, saying, "I wore a pretty headband in the Chanel show this spring and now I'm totally feeling the look! They're totally a '90s throwback in the best way. I'm loving a wide black one, but there are so many cute options." We'd have to agree: Headbands can instantly jazz up any outfit or hairstyle. But if you think you have to drop loads of dough on a Chanel number to match her look, you haven't seen these affordable options.

Ahead, we've rounded up a few of our favorite alternatives that won't make you to feel guilty for bringing back your middle school staple.

There's more to mesh fabric than what you've seen in the "I'm Too Sexy" music video. Exhibit A: This ultra-chic black headband.

Urban Outfitters Mesh Headwrap, $18, available at Urban Outfitters.

Remember those painful headaches that almost always came after wearing a plastic headband around for too long? Us too. This one is just as cute, but comes in a flexible jersey fabric that causes zero pain.

Kitsch Black Braided Knot Head Wrap, $16, available at Kitsch.

Black goes with everything, but there's nothing wrong with finding one with some floral flare.

Cara Floral Knot Headwrap, $29, available at Nordstrom.

Blair Waldorf would be proud — and maybe jealous — of this cute leather band that dresses up even your most casual look.

Kitsch Vegan Leather Skinny Headband, $16, available at Kitsch.

Pearls might feel more private school than Cannes, but if Jenner and her hairstylist Jen Atkin approve, then so do we.

ASOS Pearl Twist Headband, $13, available at ASOS.

The Internet Thinks They Know Why JAY-Z Really Named His Album 4:44 & It Has To Do With Solange Knowles

$
0
0

The internet found a crazy connection between JAY-Z's new album title, 4:44, and his fight with Solange Knowles.

On Tuesday night, Twitter user @StephenOssola took to the social media platform to share something particularly intriguing about an NYC address that holds significance to JAY-Z and his musical family. Stephen noted that the address of nightclub Le Bain, which is located at The Standard Hotel, just so happens to be 444 West 13th Street. The reason the numbers have Stephen so "shook," of course, is because The Standard Hotel is the place where that infamous elevator scuffle between JAY-Z and his sister-in-law Solange took place.

"I'm at The Standard where Solange beat Jay-Z's ass in the elevator. THE ADDRESS IS 444. I AM SHOOK," wrote the eagle-eyed fan.

Many fans consider 4:44 a response to Beyoncé's iconic album Lemonade, which explored themes of infidelity and forgiveness. Many also subscribe to the theory that Solange went off on JAY-Z after learning he was cheating on her big sister — though, again, that's mere speculation.

This is a pretty crazy theory, but before you get on the conspiracy bandwagon, there are actually two problems with it. The first is that, technically, the address for The Standard Hotel is 848 Washington, with some shops and restaurants being located at the 444 13th address. At the time of the pair's argument, they had left the nightclub The Boom Boom Room, which is located at the 848 address.

JAY-Z has yet to comment on the address being an inspiration for his album, but right now, it seems like it's nothing more than a coincidence. The "Holy Grail" rapper has already explained the reason for his title selection, and it has to do with a time — not location.

"I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 a.m., to write this song," he explained in an interview with iHeartRadio. "So it became the title of the album and everything. It's the title track because it's such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I've ever written."

There's also the fact that JAY-Z and Beyoncé have long celebrated the number four — they both have birthdays on the fourth of the month and got married on the fourth of April. Their daughter, Blue Ivy, even has the roman numeral for four in her name.

While the number four seems to be following JAY-Z around, the address of that awkward and difficult time in their family's history doesn't seem to have too strong of a connection to the album. That's probably a good thing — both parties have moved on, and made beautiful music in the meantime.

How To Sleep When It’s Hot Outside & You Don’t Have AC

$
0
0

Here's a midsummer nightmare: I don't have air-conditioning in my house, so every night I create a Dyson fan tornado and pray to make it to morning. Dramatic as that may sound, if you're someone who already has trouble sleeping, trying to do it when it's sweltering hot makes it all the more frustrating, and there's a scientific explanation why.

"Temperature is quite important for your ability to sleep, and that's an underestimated factor," says Matthew Ebben, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at NYP/Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine. "Part of your biological rhythms include a cooling of your body as you're sleeping during the night," Dr. Ebben says.

Hot temperatures inhibit your body's ability to cool off during sleep like it wants to. "Exposure to high heat loads at night — particularly if there's high humidity — can significantly reduce the rate at which heat is released from the body," says Scott Hollingshaus, MD, clinical instructor of sleep medicine at the University of Utah's Sleep Wake Center. So, it might take you longer to fall asleep if it's too hot. High temperatures can also induce a stress response in your body that can disrupt your sleep, he says. A cool room, on the other hand, facilitates this temperature drop nicely, he says.

The ideal bedroom temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees, according to the National Sleep Foundation. So, what should you do if you don't have AC? "You buy an AC, that's what you do," Dr. Ebben says. While that's not economically feasible for everyone, there are some very good reasons why you should have an AC, especially if you live in an apartment in New York City. Last summer, a study conducted by WNYC found that while the air outdoors will cool down at night, the temperature inside of apartments tends to stay as hot as it was during the day, so if you don't have AC, it can feel like you're sleeping during the heat of the day.

That said, if you must sweat it out for the remainder of the summer, ahead are some expert (and anecdotal) tips for keeping your body cool throughout the night.

Take a shower before bed.

Chances are, you're probably drenched in sweat and already considering a rinse-off before you climb under your sheets, but showering before bed can actually help you sleep, Dr. Ebben says. And you don't have to shock yourself with a freezing cold shower, unless you really feel like it. "Warm showers and baths have been shown to increase slow wave sleep," he says.

Slow wave sleep is considered the deepest stage of non-REM sleep, so it's pretty important. "If you heat up your body before you go to sleep, and then go to sleep in a normal temperature room, the data shows that you can increase your slow wave sleep," he says.

Do some light exercise.

If you can stand it, a little exercise before bed may actually help you sleep, Dr. Ebben says. The old logic used to be that exercising before bed will wake up your body, making it harder to sleep, but that's not actually true. "Exercise before bed heats up your body, which can again help low wave sleep," he says. Just make sure you do a workout that's not too vigorous, and won't make your body so hot that it's more uncomfortable to sleep. Not sure what to do? Try an easy walking video, a 30-minute yoga flow, or a quick ab routine.

Get a fan.

Obviously, if you don't have AC, you may want to buy a fan to keep you cool and provide some white noise, Dr. Ebben says. White noise can be helpful because it masks out the other sounds that might wake you up in the middle of the night. If you have a ceiling fan, Dr. Hollingshaus suggests reversing the direction so it spins counterclockwise to push hot air out of the way. And if that's not enough, my roommate's grandmother bought her a necklace fan that I would highly recommend for wearing around the house.

Use ice packs.

Place cold compresses or ice packs wrapped in a towel on your pulse points, such as your wrist, ankles, behind the knees, and neck, and it will cool down your whole body, Dr. Hollingshaus says. Or you could slip ice packs inside your pillows to provide more of a chill, just make sure they don't leak, says Daniel Barone, MD, assistant professor of neurology at the NYP/ Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine.

Try different bedding.

Less is more when it comes to bedding, so you should reduce your covers as much as possible, Dr. Hollingshaus says. Cotton sheets breathe better than other fabrics, so it can be helpful to use those during the summer, he says. Personally, I use a summer-weight quilt from Brooklinen, because it's 100% cotton and very thin.

Don't use memory foam.

Memory foam can be insulating, so it will trap heat in your body, Dr. Hollingshaus says. If you can switch to a different type of mattress or remove your mattress pad for the season, that might make a big improvement, he says.

Sleep in the coolest room.

Heat rises, so if there's any way to sleep in a lower-altitude room in your house, do it, because you'll probably be cooler, Dr. Hollingshaus says. If that's not an option, keep your curtains drawn in the room during the day to reduce how hot it gets, he says. "And try to keep the room as dark as possible; light creeping in the window can disrupt sleep," Dr. Barone says.

Hydrate.

"Drink plenty of water prior to bed to counter the sweating you will do," Dr. Hollingshaus says. You may also want to avoid alcohol for four hours before bed, because it can dehydrate you in the middle of the night, he says.

Kick out your partner.

More bodies in bed equals more heat, so avoid sharing a bed on really warm nights if you can, Dr. Hollingshaus says. If you must share a bed because you live with your partner, just make sure that you have the right bedding to keep two sweaty bodies cool.

Kendall Jenner's Travel Bucket List Is Surprisingly Relatable

Between all of her modeling shoots, fashion-collection launches, and KUWTK duties, Kendall Jenner is pretty much always traveling. She even has a list of dream fictional destinations, and, yep, it includes Hogwarts.

So it makes sense that the older Jenner sister's travel bucket list is well-informed and full of off-the-beaten-path spots. Kendall recently posted a wish list of homes around the world she'd love to visit on her website, and it's actually also surprisingly relatable — and affordable.

From a bamboo house in Bali (starts at $336, accommodates eight people) to a modern cabin in Iceland to a luxury villa in Mykonos, it definitely reads like many a millennial girl's travel bucket list. And just like many of us, she's just as likely to find an interesting house to stay in as she is to enjoy the amenities of a hotel.

"Staying in hotels is obviously so nice (room service!), but I love staying in a home when I'm traveling because I get a better vibe of the location," she wrote on her website. "It definitely makes me feel more like a local, like when we stayed in an Airbnb in Turks and Caicos."

Check out a few of Kendall's dream destinations, ahead.

Bamboo House, Bali, Indonesia

Price starts at: $336/night, accommodates eight

This house is in the middle of the jungle and on a river (but don't worry, there's still Wi-Fi and laptop-friendly workspaces!).

This historic fort has been reimagined as a luxury resort.

The Houdini Estate, Hollywood, CA

Price starts at: $1,000, accommodates 12

Formerly owned by the famous magician Harry Houdini, "this would be the perfect place to staycation or throw the most amazing party," writes Kendall. According to the description, "the Houdini Estate still has caves, hidden tunnels, terraced gardens, and a deep-water tank where Harry Houdini reportedly practiced his underwater escapes."

Off-Grid ItHouse, Pioneertown, CA

Price starts at: $393, accommodates four

The Off-grid itHouse, within close driving distance of both Palm Springs and Joshua Tree, is 100% powered by solar energy and "blends into the desert landscape in the coolest way," writes Kendall.
