20 Female Instagram Artists You Should Follow Immediately

$
0
0

Instagram is usually categorized as a social media network. This isn't really incorrect — we do go there to post photos of nights out, see what friends are up to, and stalk exes — but that classification misses a larger role the app fulfills.

Instagram is a cultural institution that is equal parts digital museum, cabinet of curiosities, and nasty woman gallery. If Facebook has become the social media platform we go to for news and Twitter the one we visit for live streams, then Instagram has become the space for finding inspiration, creativity, and, often, a dash of quirkiness. As writer Molly Young said in this week's The New York Times Magazine, Instagram, with its Explore tab, has "ushered in a golden age of personal eccentricity."

There is no better place to find this than the profiles of female illustrators, animators, miniaturists, painters, and jewelers whose masterpieces fill Instagram and expose you to rainbow-filled worlds of fancy. Their feeds are escapes from the ordinary. But often, instead of escaping completely, they make you want to pick up a pen, a paintbrush, a sewing needle, or a piece of paper, and join in.

Ahead, 20 creators you should follow, stat.

Dakota Johnson Just Debuted Her Best Cool-Girl Hair Yet

$

Dakota Johnson is the queen of playing it low-key. Public outings (and paparazzi sightings) for the Fifty Shades Darker actress are rare, and her beauty looks often stay under-the-radar. Last we knew, Johnson's hair was honey blond and medium-length, with her signature, grown-out bangs. But overnight, the world handed us a new crop of photos of the star for us to lust after. The source was Vogue 's February cover, which showed Johnson sporting a choppy bob and a much darker hue — and we are digging it.

In our minds, Johnson is the perpetual cool-girl, and this cut absolutely fits that perception. But she is no stranger to a shorter length. When she was filming the movie How To Be Single last year, she also had a chin-length cut that she dyed near-jet-black. Since then, it appeared she had been growing out her ends (while simultaneously wearing extensions for her role as Anastasia Steele). So, the cut is a refreshing nod to her old style.

Another question is whether or not it's a wig. Which, considering that it's a major trend sweeping Hollywood right now, is entirely possible. Either way, we're loving the look on Johnson, and can't help but root for her dark side.

Creator Of The Arrangement Says Show Is NOT About Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes, Okay?

$

When E! released a trailer for The Arrangement last summer , many of us walked away with an inkling of déjà vu. This looks familiar, we thought before realizing the narrative seems a lot like the one we imagine transpired between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, show creator Jonathan Abrahams is stressing again that he was not inspired by the ex-couple. To quote our story in May of last year, the premise is as follows:

"...a young actress, Megan (Christine Evangelista), gets a chance to audition opposite a motorcycle-riding Hollywood heartthrob, Kyle West (Josh Henderson). They start to fall in love, but there's a problem: He's a member of a mysterious organization and buddies with its nefarious leader, Terrence Anderson (Michael Vartan). As Kyle and Megan get serious — a contract marriage is on the table — Terrence wants to exert an ominous amount of control over Kyle's personal life."

But the story line must have come from somewhere, right?

“I totally understand why people think that considering the rumors we’ve heard," Abrahams said. Those rumors being that Holmes was hired to play Cruises' girlfriend IRL by his Scientology cohorts in order to add a little salt to his image.

“I know people are going to draw these comparisons but I’m not going to create story based on my fear of that or try to encourage that," Abrahams said. "I am not in the business of doing an exposé. I’ll leave that to others who are doing it probably much better than I can.”

The biggest difference between Abrahams' story and that of the real Cruise is that the lead character isn't affiliated with a religious organization. Scientology has been swapped with a self-help organization, Institute of the Higher Mind.

Considering that Scientology's legal department has a reputation for combating fire with fire, there's no way Abrahams could have kept that fact the same without a massive headache.

You Probably Already Own Two-Thirds Of Selena Gomez's Outfit

Regardless of where you stand on the leggings-as-pants debacle, you'll surely appreciate Selena Gomez's latest outfit — not only because it makes for a pretty solid defense for the look (yes, you can wear them out of the house, even when you're not headed to the gym), but also because you probably own most of the items needed to recreate it.

The singer was having a quiet evening, enjoying the Los Angeles sunset with her squad, and the whole thing was Instagrammed, naturally. It's kind of like Gomez and her pals are like our group of pals — and, then, we realized she's wearing the exact same outfit we find ourselves in every single weekend: leggings, worn with anything that will make them look "fancy."

Real luv ❤️

A photo posted by ⚡️Simi & Haze⚡️ (@simihaze) on

As much as we like to think of "uniform dressing," our off-the-clock outfit logic isn't that refined. We tend to live in our leggings and call it athleisure. We may put in a little extra effort to avoid any side-eyes on the street. We have the Kendall Jenner-sanctioned bomber jacket. Now, we'll add a Selena-inspired button-down into our rotation — one that's just oversized enough, just long enough, and just boxy enough that it offsets the tight fit of the bottoms.

Gomez found her match in a white button-down that not only checks off all three requirements listed above, but also features slits on either side that give it some shape (and show off the leggings' high-waist fit). The perfect finishing touch? A pair of Converse low-tops, to round out the sporty-but-not-athletic theme.

My beautiful girls 💕

A photo posted by Raquelle Stevens (@raquellestevens) on

If you look closely, Gomez's outfit isn't totally off brand for the performer: The accessories — a pair of pink, round sunglasses and a stringy white choker — check off two out of the five Selena outfit signatures. This particular outfit just happens to resonate more with our own closets than when she's wearing head-to-toe Louis Vuitton.

We easily cough up our paychecks for the latest skin-care innovations or the newest K-beauty must-haves, but when it comes to eyeshadow, we’re wise to the game. We know that the drugstore market is just as good (or at times, better) than the luxury products available. The biggest challenge is figuring out which palettes are worth plucking off the shelves — especially when you can't swatch them on your hand like you would in a department store.

We went ahead and solved the problem (and then some) with a little help from our favorite celebrity makeup artists. Ahead, find our 19 favorite drugstore palettes for under $21 — whether you're looking for some smoky-eye inspiration or a jewel-toned kit worthy of your next night out.

You've never seen beauty quite like this before. Check out ourBeauty Innovator Awards for the smartest, funkiest, most fresh to death products of the year.

Curious About Anal Beads? Here’s What You Need To Know — & Some Great Ones To Try

$
0
0

When it comes to the wild world of anal play, anal beads are a great place to start. Many options are specifically designed for beginners, and they have the benefit of being relatively simple, but they deliver powerful results.

"You may ask how beads really work," says Tino Dietrich, CEO and co-founder of Ella Paradis. "This very much depends on what you like."

Chelsea McCain of Adult Empire explained that, while anal beads act as a massage when they're in the body, their biggest benefit is the feeling of removal during or just before orgasm.

"The key to the beads is not necessarily the feeling you feel when they are going in, but rather when you pull them out," she says. "Put them in and slowly pull out during intercourse, masturbation, or right before you’re about to orgasm for a little extra boost."

With all these thoughts in mind, we went on a hunt for some of the best anal beads to get you started on your journey, and asked Dietrich and McCain for some tips and advice for beginners. Ahead is everything you need to know before using anal beads, and the different kinds you may want to ty.

The gap between what we learned in sex ed and what we're learning through sexual experience is big — way too big. So we're helping to connect those dots by talking about the realities of sex, from how it's done to how to make sure it's consensual, safe, healthy, and pleasurable all at once. Check out more, here.

Start gradually.

When it comes to choosing your first anal beads, it's wise to pick ones that are specifically designed to ease you into it.

"Start with a slight gradual increase set of beads," says McCain. "As the beads start to get larger up the length of the strand, you are allowing yourself to get used to the toy. You don’t want to jump into anything too advanced too quickly."

Make sure there’s a loop or handle.

Just like butt plugs, a loop or handle at the end of the strand is simply good for peace of mind, since you know the toy can be easily removed and won't somehow get lost.

"This helps to avoid an unpleasant surprise or even a visit to the local ER for removal," says Dietrich.

Inspect the beads for warning signs.

Another thing to consider when choosing your beads is the quality. Dietrich says to avoid beads held together with a thin nylon string because they're difficult to clean. When you do decide on a set, inspect the beads before use to ensure they're smooth with no rogue sharp edges.

Get a thick anal lubricant.

Lube is always a good idea when it comes to anal play, but McCain recommends anal lube specifically.

"Of course, you can use a water-based lubricant, but the thickness of anal lube sticks to the toy better, so you don’t have to apply as often," she says.

Also, make sure you're lubing all the beads. "Really coat them, as well as your backdoor, so that you are well lubricated," she adds. "It’s a tight hole back there that is gripping around a toy, so you don’t want to hit a dry spot that makes you have to pause your fun."

Start solo.

If you're not ready to dive in with a partner, anal beads can easily be used on yourself.

"It allows you to get comfortable with your new toy and gives you the opportunity to explore this new way to add another level of pleasure to your intimate lifestyle," says Dietrich.

Relax and communicate!

If you're nervous, McCain recommends teasing the area with a mini egg or bullet vibrator to get things going. This way, you won't be tense when it comes time for insertion.

"You can also use a condom with your beads," adds Dietrich. "It keeps them clean and may make penetration easier and more comfortable."

Purchase an anti-bacterial cleaner.

In order to safely use your anal beads repeatedly, you'll want to clean them between use using an anti-bacterial toy cleaner. After cleaning, Dietrich says to store them in an open space to dry.

In the words of SNL 's Stefon, these beads have everything. "You have a retrieval pull ring, a gradual increase in ball size, and flexibility strand that can help for beginners so they can move the beads around inside them to hit all their spots to see what they enjoy," says McCain.

Blush Novelties Sassy 10 Anal Beads, $3.95, available at Adult Empire.

For something sturdier with less bend, these beads are also gradual and gentle, and give you total control over how much you want to enjoy.

Lovehoney Fifty Shades of Grey - Pleasure Intensified Anal Beads, $39.99, available at Ella Paradis.

If you're not sure what you'd like, McCain recommends going with a kit.

"If you get a kit with numerous styles of beads, you can have a lot to experiment with for one low price," she says. "A great thing to purchase and use with a partner on a date night to see what you both enjoy or on an evening when you are just plain feeling adventurous."

Pipedream Anal Fantasy: Beginner’s Bead Kit, $11.95, available at Adult Empire.

The next step when it comes to anal beads is to experiment with shapes.

"This is a different route to go after you’ve tried out a basic strand, McCain says. "See what an odd bead shape feels like, giving your anal muscles a new design to experiment with."

Shots Media Touche Bona Dea, $26.95, available at Adult Empire.

If you're looking to make an investment, a silicone probe is soft, cleanable, and long-lasting. This is great for people who think anal play is going to be a staple in their sex lives, and who want to get a little more adventurous.

Lovehoney Fifty Shades Of Darker Collection: Carnal Promise Silicone Vibrating Pleasure Beads, $39.95, available at Adult Empire.

If you're having trouble relaxing, you might consider going for something that vibrates. According to McCain, this can help with insertion. Plus, it feels great.

"Those backdoor nerve endings will surely be pleased with subtle or intense vibrations," she says. "A new feeling to experiment with!"

Cal Exotics Waterproof Vibrating Pleasure Beads, $9.95, available at Adult Empire.

Another option for those going the vibration route, but are feeling a little bolder. This sturdy silicone wand is a similar investment as the previous one, just turned up a notch.

Topco Climax Silicone Vibrating Bum Beads, $31.99, available at Ella Paradis.

Another way to play with anal beads is to experiment with temperature, and this involves purchasing a glass toy. "Run the toy under warm water for heat play and cold water for a little chill," says McCain.

Make sure to check the temperature first, and to warn your partner when you're making this switch!

Pipedream Icicles Gold Edition - G010, $24.95, available at Adult Empire.

This toy is a longer spin on the last, but it's also glass and holds whatever temperature you desire.

"Glass toys are also easy to clean and nonporous, making them extremely body safe," McCain continues. "A lot of people say that the heavy weight of glass adds an extra sensation that can only be felt and not explained, but is more prominent when felt anally."

Pipedream Icicles Gold Edition - G06, $29.95, available at Adult Empire.

This toy is one of many that are starting to incorporate two-in-one pleasure. The loop of this toy is positioned around the testicles while the beads are inserted into the anus.

People with penises "can feel the sensation of beads and prostate stimulation while keeping their erections hard as a rock!" says McCain.

Pipedream Fetish Fantasy Elite Ball Sinch With Anal Beads, $9.95, available at Adult Empire.

Another two-in-one toy, this set of anal beads also stimulates the clitoris. Position the beads in the anus and the ears of the rabbit on the clitoris, reaching double the pleasure completely on your own.

Doc Johnson Mood: Kinky Bunny, $14.97, available at Adult Empire.

The Creator Of Period Panties Just Revolutionized Your Period Again

When Thinx created period panties, you probably thought that it was done. Freed from the bonds of tampons and pads, you ran through open fields with a smile on your face like those women in TV commercials. Well, Thinx is back and its created something that's so simple, we're wondering why nobody had thought of it before. The company is launching RETA, the world's first reusable tampon applicator.

Photo: Courtesy of Thinx.

According to a press release, RETA is made from medical-grade silicone and is about the same size as a tube of lipstick. That means that you can tote it around with you, and when you're done inserting your tampon, all you have to do is wash it and it's ready to go all over again.

With two years of development behind it, Thinx hopes that the new applicator will eliminate the need for the one-time-use disposable options that you're used to (it's supposed to last about 10 years). The brand states that "20 billion menstrual products end up in landfills every year." Tampon applicators alone account for 7 billion.

You're probably wondering why a period panty company would introduce tampons, but Thinx is quick to mention that not everyone's comfortable with period panties and menstrual cups. Plus, Thinx also developed its own line of tampons (two styles are available for light and heavy days) that you can use with RETA, though the company confirmed to us that you'll be able to use your favorite brand with the applicator.

Photo: Courtesy Thinx.

The RETA is expected to start shipping in March (and Thinx tampons will be available January 31), but you can sign up for a wait list on Thinx's website right now.

Paris Jackson Expresses Gratitude Over Michael Jackson Biopic Cancellation

After nearly breaking the internet, Urban Mythshas announced that it will no longer air its Michael Jackson-themed program starring Joseph Fiennes (a white actor) as the late superstar.

This decision came after the show runners came under attack for their portrayal of Jackson. At the forefront of the outrage was Jackson's 18-year-old daughter, Paris, who upon hearing the news of the episode's cancellation, expressed her gratitude over the Sky network show's decision.

She wrote, "I'm surprised the family's feelings were actually taken into consideration for once, we all really do appreciate it more than y'all know [sic]."

Her cousins, Taj Jackson and T.J. Jackson, also shared their feelings about the news on Twitter. Taj wrote, "Thank you to the fans, you continue to fight for my Uncle Michael's legacy. And thank you to the media, for covering the extreme backlash."

T.J. had similar thoughts: "Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard. As I said it wasn't comedy, it was mockery with no taste. A great victory for his legacy!"

The program was going to be included as part of an eight-part series called Urban Myths: A Brand New Collection of TV Comedies, recounting celebrity rumors. The concept sounds entertaining, but the execution of this episode in particular was astounding. Hopefully the rest of the episodes are less offensive than this one seemed to be.

Would You Wear This Bold New Denim Style?

$

0

It's been a minute since we saw a real disrupter in the denim world. There was a period of time when we couldn't even keep up with the different types of jeans trending — one day, skinny jeans were going strong; the next, cropped flares were taking center stage. With the exception of the Vetements' deconstructed denim (and all the copycats that followed), we haven't seen tons of new innovations lately. But, here to change things up is new Ukranian designer Ksenia Schnaider, with her polarizing new silhouette she calls the Demi-Denims.

Schnaider's style looks like a pair of denim Bermuda shorts and a pair of jeans in one: There's a shorter, looser panel that hits just at the knee, layered over the bottom, tighter pant leg. But, it only looks like this from the front (from the back, it looks like a normal pair of frayed, straight-leg jeans). And it's already catching on among street style stars like Eleonora Carisi and Alina Gelzina.

"Most of us wear jeans and look for something new all the time," the designer tells Refinery29. "When was there anything new with jeans? There are a few basic cuts that are modified from time to time that are made in different colors, whereas Demi-Denims look like nothing you have ever seen before." And we agree.

"I remember my friends wearing vintage high-waisted trousers all the time and I started to look closely at them. They were banana-pants from second-hand markets, which are very popular in Ukraine. I wondered how I could re-invent these pants and make them look modern," she says of how the idea came to be about. "At the same time, I was fascinated by the idea of combining a skirt and a pair of trousers in one cut from my early student years. So, when we were working on our spring/summer 2016 collection at the studio, I suggested giving this idea a try."

Has Hollywood Ever Gotten Martin Luther King Jr. Right On Screen?

$
0
0

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential figures in American history. Heralded as the prophetic leader of the civil rights movement, Dr. King has been iconicized through multiple lenses. He was a longtime proponent of nonviolent activism, but still managed to significantly disrupt the racist fabric of American life during his lifetime. Dr. King is central to dozens of monumental social justice events — many of which have been recreated for TV and films — including the Montgomery bus boycotts, the March on Washington, and the fight for voting rights in Selma, AL.

Such a prominent historical figure is not without criticism and contradictory opinions about the legitimacy of his legacy. Some people see Dr. King as too passive. They insist that his agreeability is the only reason he earned the posthumous honor of being one of three people, and the only African American, to have a national U.S. holiday honoring them. Others see him as revolutionary champion for justice and equality, deserving of all his praise. There are others who prefer to uplift the unseen civil rights players lost in Dr. King’s shadow, like Bayard Rustin. All of this contention has presented itself in the on-screen representations of Dr. King throughout the years.

So answering the question, ‘Has anyone in Hollywood ever gotten it right?’ is hard when we’re talking about the man who has assumed legendary status since his assassination. Here are some of the most memorable representations of Dr. King in film and television.

The Witness: From The Balcony Of Room 306 (2008)

Tackling the subject of Dr. King’s death, as opposed to his life, Samuel "Billy" Kyles provides a gripping portrayal of the assassination that ended Dr. King’s life. One of the strong points of this short documentary is how Dr. King’s push for economic reform made him more of a political threat. At the time of his death, he was fighting for sanitation workers to receive a 10-cent raise.

Selma, Lord, Selma (1999)

Jurnee Smollett stole the show as a little girl befriended by Dr. King during his visit to Selma to mobilize people around voting rights. The activist played the role of a mentor, encouraging her to get involved with the movement for equality.

Boondocks, “Return of the King” (2006)

In a differently mythicized version of Dr. King, the creators of Boondocks reimagined him awakening from the 32-year-coma he suffered as a result of a gunshot wound. He’s a disgruntled leader displeased with the current state of Black America. This satirical portrayal of Dr. King made him out to be more of “pull up your pants” Bill Cosby figure.

King (1978)

This three-part miniseries aired over three consecutive days and was nominated for nine Emmy awards. It's acknowledged for being the first production to humanize Dr. King.

Our Friend, Martin (1999)

If you went to a school that was big on Black history, there is a good chance that you had to watch Our Friend, Martin. This educational animation will forever go down in my memory as the quintessential Martin Luther King Manifesto. It intended to educate kids while encouraging them to have strong civic morals.

Selma (2014)

Ava Duvernay is responsible for the most recent big-budget project about Dr. King. Truthfully, it might be one of the best portrayals. Dr. King is a humble organizer among a group of other activists with a powerful voice and knack for leadership.

Our endless enthusiasm for unicorns is apparent, and — given the surge of unicorn-inspired beauty products — it's safe to assume that we're not alone. Which is all fine and well, but we want to be clear that there is a breaking point. (Like if you start believing you are, in fact, a mystical creature, it might be time to hit the brakes.) But that doesn't mean you can't dress up like one — as one woman did in this unicorn hair tutorial for Super Deluxe — right? Press play on the video below, and decide for yourself.

As you can see, one lucky model underwent the ultimate unicorn transformation. Her hair was bleached, colored, curled, teased, dusted in sparkles, and topped off with a Styrofoam horn. And while the finished look isn’t the most practical thing on earth, it's still one of the prettiest things we've seen as of late, not to mention the perfect segue into the weekend ahead. Now please excuse us as we ride off into the sunset — a.k.a. Friday night.

26 Perfect Conversation Starters For Your Next First Date

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

In the best-case scenario, you go on a first date with someone, and you hit it off. The chemistry is off the charts, and you're never at a loss for what to talk about.

Sometimes (okay, most of the time), though, first dates aren't smooth sailing. That doesn't always mean you're incompatible — just that we are humans, and dating can be awkward. It can be hard to figure out what to ask without making it seem like you're interrogating your date. After all, the key to a good date is relaxed conversation, and the last thing you want is to recreate the beginning of this scene from The Holiday, in which Cameron Diaz essentially makes Jude Law's palms sweat from her interview-like first-date demeanor.

But whether you're trying to fill an awkward silence or just trying to get to know your date better, we have you covered. We sent out an anonymous survey to get people's best, most creative first-date questions. Ahead are the ones that stood out to us most. Check them out, and if you want, leave a comment with some of your own go-to conversation-starters.

How are you getting home?

"What better way to seal the deal, if you know what I mean?"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Do you like reality TV?

"It's totally cool if the person I'm dating isn't into The Bachelor or anything, but they have to respect that I am!"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Do you like coffee or tea?

"How else will I know what to make for you in the morning?"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What's on your bucket list?

"It's fairly important to me that someone I date has ambitions and has 'a zest for life,' if you will."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Who is your favorite Kardashian?

"The answer to this question will tell you everything you need to know about a person. (Hint: The correct answer is always Kim.)"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What's your favorite song to dance to?

"I've been known to tear it up on the dance floor, and I need someone who can keep up!"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Who in your family are you closest to?

"I have a soft spot for mama's boys. More often than not, it shows that they can respect women — uh, just as long as he's not too close to his mom."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Are you a morning person or a night person?

"This works because it helps to see if your schedules align, or if you're destined to be up cooking breakfast alone while your potential S.O. sleeps in."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Who do you live with?

"This might be more of an NYC/big city question but since most people these days can't afford to live alone, it's always good to suss out your date's living situation — in case you'll one day be meeting these roommates."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Tell me about your friends.

"Friends of friends are often hit-or-miss, and unfortunately, friends-of-significant-others can be even more hit-or-miss. That being said, it's good to try to feel out a potential S.O's friends early on!"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What's your favorite food?

"I spend a good chunk of my waking hours either eating or thinking about food, so I like knowing what other people are eating!"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What books have you been into lately?

"It's like John Waters said: 'If you go home with somebody and they don't have books, don't fuck them.'"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Are you more of a cat or dog person?

"I am vehemently a cat person and I need a potential S.O. to be cool with that."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What do you like to do when you're not working?

"I feel like living in NYC, everyone is pretty much married to their jobs, but even if you really love what you do, you've gotta have a life outside of that."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What kind of music do you listen to?

"Ask anyone who knows me: Music is the biggest part of my life. I love being able to share that with someone. If we don't [already] have any favorite artists in common, [introducing them to new stuff] can be a really great way to get to know each other."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Describe yourself in one word.

"It sounds really interview-y, so I only pull this one out when the conversation is dying and I'm trying to revive it."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

How did your parents meet?

"Everyone loves a great story! Asking how someone's parents met opens the conversation to their relationship with their parents."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Where do you work?

"Maybe it's a little boring, but I always like to ask where someone works, or what they do for a living. I feel like it opens the conversation and then you can find out if they're passionate about what they do, and if not, what they would rather be doing instead."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

If you could visit any time period in all of history, what would it be?

"I'm a huge history buff, so I like knowing what everyone else's favorite historical period is! Plus, I like to think it's a thought-provoking question that'll spark some good conversation."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What movies have you been interested in recently?

"Okay, someone's taste in movies isn't the be-all, end-all, but it does tell you a little more about them. Are they a Pulp Fiction fan, or are they more Animal House? Or both?!"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What's your relationship with your family like?

"This isn't so much a question as a socialization philosophy. I like to be as real as possible with people on a first date. Recently, it was 'What's your relationship with your family like? Oh, it's bad? Mine too. Tell me more.'"

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

What's your favorite TV show?

"First things first: Find out if you're binge-compatible."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Where did you grow up?

"If you're on a first date and you want to get to know the person, start by asking about who they are and where they grew up."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

"You can tell a lot about someone by how they answer this question."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Do you like reality TV?

"I ask because I love it, and anyone who knows about the Kardashians or Real Housewives gets brownie points."

Illustrated by: Abbie Winters

Where have you traveled?

"I love to travel myself, so I want to know if the person I'm dating has been to interesting places, or is open to jet-setting with me!"

Khloé Kardashian Says Paris Arrests Are Bringing "Closure" For Kim

This week we saw a major breakthrough in a crime that shocked us all: the armed robbery of Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week in October. As of Friday, Parisian authorities have charged 10 different suspects in the case. While the victim herself hasn't reacted to the development, her sister Khloé opened up about the impact of the news.

"For me, I think it’s so rewarding," Khloé told People on Friday. "I don’t care — from the poorest of the poor to the richest of the rich, nobody deserves anything to be taken from them. I think that’s a disgusting act. And I think whenever you get that closure, that has to be a sign of relief for you."

For those wondering whether we'll see how the family fared in the weeks following the shocking incident on their reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the answer is yes. "Well, we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t," Khloé reasoned. "We are so vulnerable and [have opened] up our lives so much in the past that interestingly enough, if we don’t show things fans get really angry — they feel as if that was taken away from them."

The 32-year-old also believes that for Kim, sharing her traumatic experience on KUWTK may have been healing in a way. "I think for Kim, it was maybe therapeutic for her," Khloé explained. "It’s also something that disgustingly happens to a lot of other people and we always come from a place of honesty."

The Revenge Body host added that she's happy to see her older sister out and about again after hunkering down for so long. Kim is currently in Dubai on work, appearing at her makeup artist's lux masterclass. “We’re working type of girls, so it makes us happy to be out and about working," Khloe said. "But I also think it was great for her to have all that family time." It's all about balance, as they say.

5 Ways To Rejuvenate Your Life In 2017

After a holiday season filled with partying, drinking, and very little sleep, I felt it was time for me to reset, recharge, and rejuvenate. So this week was all about doing me — for five days in a row.

I started with a Bio-Energy Lift Facial from Naturopathica, a treatment that is supposed to exfoliate and stimulate collagen growth. Once my face felt refreshed, I moved on to rejuvenating the rest of my body.

I had always been curious about listening to binaural beats, often used as a meditation technique, since it involves listening to a different sound in each ear at specific frequencies, so I gave that a try. (Whether or not it works, it's actually relatively popular, and there are over 1 million binaural beats YouTube videos that supposedly relax and calm your mind.) After that, I had a session with a hypnotherapist, tried a ton of incredible beauty products, and went on a hike on the outskirts of New York City.

At the end of the day, rejuvenation is completely personal, and what works well for somebody might stress out someone else. After devoting five days to my own rejuvenation, I whole-heartedly recommend digging deep into your personal happy place to find out what you need to do to release your stress this year. Bring it on, 2017.

You Can Drink Like The Ruler Of The 7 Kingdoms At This Game Of Thrones-Themed Bar

Game Of Thrones fans know Tyrion Lannister LOVES to drink. While you, unfortunately, can't go to a bar with Tyrion as your wingman, you can now at least drink in a bar that looks like it belongs in Westeros.

Pop Up Geeks, a U.K.-based themed-bar company, recently opened Blood & Wine in Edinburgh. The bar serves Game of Thrones-themed drinks and is decorated to look like a tavern straight out of the series.

According to the Blood & Wine website, the drink served at the pop-up were inspired by the wines, ales, spirits, and infusions in George R.R. Martin's books. Specifically, BuzzFeed reports the bar serves "Myrish fire wine" and "Black Tar Rum cocktail" among other things. There are also some food options like "Frey Pies" and "Sansa's Lemon Cakes."

The bar is open every Wednesday and Thursday evening throughout January and February. That means, for a limited time, you can travel to Scotland for the opportunity to party like Tyrion. It's the only way to get a real taste of the Game Of Thrones world — you know, minus the incest and bloodshed.

American Apparel Is Maybe, Probably Closing For Good

When news broke of Gildan Activewear's purchase of American Apparel (to the tune of $103 million, up from its $88 million offer) earlier this week, there was hope for the retailer still under new management. Alas, it looks like it's time to bid adieu to "Made in the U.S.A" V-neck T-shirts purchased in bulk, and neon or metallic Spandex-filled pieces you bought for that one concert that one time. Gildan didn't renew the lease of American Apparel's production and distribution facilities in L.A., the Los Angeles Times reports. (Its Golden Grove factory was already sol d, acccording to the publication.) Apparently, there was little interest in the brand's 110 retail locations during the sale, too.

While remaining stores were expected to close shortly after the Gildan deal was closed, nothing was officially announced. According to a spokesperson for American Apparel, the retailer's stores are expected to remain for the next 100 days, with the possibility of them keeping doors open for longer. Garry Bell, a representative for Gildan, told WWD that more specifics as to the integration plan for American Apparel would likely become public during the company's next conference call, which is slated for February 23.

However this shakes out, you'll probably want to squeeze in a pitstop to your local American Apparel for some hoodies and lame everything while you can.

This story was originally published on January 10, 2017.

On Monday, Canadian retailer Gildan Activewear bought American Apparel for the hefty sum of $88 million, Fortune reports.

Back in October 2015, American Apparel filed for bankruptcy after falling into a downward spiral for most of the year. This purchase saves the future of the company, but what does it mean for the trendy retail locations where we get our bright colors and glossy prints?

According to Fortune, Gildan Activewear won't take any of American Apparel's 110 retail locations, instead focusing on the brand and its manufacturing, including taking over some of the California-based plants. Remember, one of the American Apparel's calling cards is its "Made in USA" promise, yet Gildan produces most of its product overseas. This is just one of many uncertainties when it comes to the future of the brand, which has been a retail staple since it was founded in 1998.

Gildan was up against Next Level Apparel in the battle for ownership, originally bidding $66 million before raising the sum in order to secure the sale.

Neither American Apparel nor Gildan Activewear responded to Fortune 's request for comment, which is likely because details are confidential and the sale won't be secured until approved by a judge on Thursday.

At least it doesn't look like we'll have to call it "Canadian Apparel" now. At least, not yet.

Why This Natural Hair Doll Is So Important To Me

$
0
0

My love for dolls goes back as far as I can remember. As a toddler, my mother would carefully show me the vintage Barbies she’d been collecting since middle school. I remember being instantly entranced by all of the mod mini dresses, Go-Go boots, and jackets and wanting it all for myself. My obsession began — even though none of those dolls looked like me.

My mother worked hard to provide me with toys and books that helped shape my identity as a black girl in America, but, frankly, there was very little diversity in my play things — many of which were hand-me-downs of her play things.

That's not to say I didn't have black dolls growing up. There were a few — and I remember them all more distinctly than the others. First came Addy, the original black American Girl Doll. I connected with her story and her hair. I emulated my mom and grandmother, placing Addy on my lap and carefully brushing her strands from roots to tips. That was the first time I felt like a toy fully represented who I was.

I had other black Barbies, but none of them embodied natural hair in a truthful way; they were simply carbon copies of their white counterparts, painted with a shade of chocolate. And those representations of beauty in my dolls — of sleek, straight, never tangled hair — came to define my own perceptions of beauty. I used chemical relaxers and wore straight weaves, because I didn't see my own coils as desirable. Only this year, with the rise of the natural hair movement, have I begun to love and accept my own hair.

those representations of beauty in my dolls — of sleek, straight, never tangled hair — came to define my own perception of beauty.

And that's exactly why Naturally Perfect dolls, the brain-child of Angelica and Jason Sweeting, are so important. The four dolls come in varying brown skin tones with hair textures that range from loose to tight curls. The dolls’ hair can be washed and styled like human hair, and the Naturally Perfect Instagram account offers hairstyle inspiration and tutorials for moms, dads, and daughters to practice styling.

The Sweetings said that the inspiration for the dolls stemmed from their daughter’s similar desire to look like her straight-haired, non-black dolls.

“We are creating Naturally Perfect Dolls to let girls know that they are beautiful,” the Sweetings state on their website. “Our girls need to see a reflection of their own unique beauty."

According to Glamour, Naturally Perfect isn’t stopping there. The company revealed plans to release dolls wearing Hijabs in the near future, and more after that.

That representation is crucial for both the development of young women, but also for society at large that still clings to outdated, Western beauty standards. (And sends young women home from school and job interviews because of their hair — hair that should be celebrated.)

I only wish that I had a Naturally Perfect doll when I was growing up, but I rest in knowing that I'll have the opportunity to give one to my future daughter — just as my mom shared her dolls with me.

The Latest Kardashian-West Trend Is Everywhere (& It's Been Around For Decades)

If celebrities aren't always starting the trends, they sure are doing a heck of a job putting them on the world's stage ( er, runway). And for that, we give them credit. Hell, it's why we keep up with them day in and day out. Speaking of keeping up, we've noticed a familiar trend being shared between Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian recently that can actually be traced back to the '80s. And though we wouldn't call it a vintage athleisure revival, it's the freshest throwback we've seen in quite a while. Yes, even more #tbt than the comeback of the Juicy Couture tracksuit.

We're talking about the revival of black and red striped Adidas pieces popping up on and off the catwalk. Most recently, we saw it on Gosha Rubchinkskiy's fall 2017 runway in the form of a hoodie. Just a day or two before that, we saw it on Kardashian, as a full tracksuit form à la Rev Run and the late Jam Master Jay of Run D.M.C. And before that, West's upcoming Calabasas line that broke the Internet via Kim's lethal Snapchat account featured the aesthetic.

Ahead, you'll see every example we've found so far. And until we figure out what's caused the resurgence of this specific Adidas trend, we'll be mentally preparing ourselves see it all over NYFW come February.

One of the first times we saw this red and black Adidas jacket was on Run DMC in 1970.
